used to mechanically debride a wound until granulation tissue starts to form in wound bed. keep moist at all times to prevent pain and disruption of healing
hydrocolloid
composed of gelatin and pectin. forms a seal at wound’s surface.
how long can a hydrocolloid stay in place?
3 to 5 days
hydrogel
composed of mostly water, promotes autolytic debridement and cooling. rehydrates and fills dead space
when to use hydrogel
for infected, deep wounds or necrotic tissue. not for moderately to heavily draining wounds. reduces pain and breakdown
alginate
packs wounds. nonadherent.
when is the risk of hemhorrage greatest?
24 to 48 hours after injury or surgery
what to not use on pressure injury wound
alcohol, dakin’s, acetic acid, etc. use saline or whatever is ordered by provider
