How did electricity affect production in the United States?
It made things way more efficient to make. This is because rather than using manual labor to do things, they could use machines that needed electricity to work.
Why did World War I occur in Europe?
Because the prince of Austria-Hungary got shot by a terrorist from Serbia.
Serbia and Austria-Hungary are both located in the Balkan Peninsula
Technically the dude who got shot isn’t called a prince, he’s called an Archduke, but the Archduke was next in line to be the leader of Austria-Hungary, so it’s why I call him a prince.
Why did World War I involve so many different countries?
How World War I started, in order:
- Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
- Serbia calls on its friend, Russia, to help them out.
- When Russia joins, then Austria-Hungary calls on Germany to help them fight Russia.
- When Germany joins, Russia asks France to join to help fight Germany.
Why did England join World War I?
Germany wanted to sneak attack France, so they invaded this little country called Belgium since France wouldn’t expect it.
But Belgium was a neutral country, and England didn’t like that Germany was attacking a neutral country, so England got in the war to help France + Russia + Serbia
What is unrestricted submarine warfare?
It means that you will attack any ships you see with your submarines. You have NO restrictions on the ships you will attack. “unrestricted”

Trench Warfare
What new technology forced soldiers to adopt trench warfare?
How were soldiers able to take down the trenches of their enemies?
New Invention: Tanks
Why did Germany declare unrestricted submarine warfare?
Because the USA was giving lots of supplies to England. The USA was doing this because they wanted to make money.
What is the Lusitania?
It was a ship that had 2,000 people on board and was sunk by the Germans. This is because Germany had declared unrestricted submarine warfare.
How did the Lusitania affect international opinion?
It made a lot of people angry at Germany because they were killing innocent people
What is “No Man’s Land”?
The land between the two trenches of opposing sides.
What principle of the USA was violated because of Germany’s unrestricted submarine warfare?
The freedom of the seas principle
What does “Freedom of the Seas” mean?
It means that all countries should have the freedom to use the Oceans to make money without having to worry about getting attacked by other countries.
What was the Zimmerman telegram?
It was a letter sent to Mexico from Germany to convince Mexico to fight against the United States.
If Germany won, they would give Mexico back the lands that the United States had taken during the Mexican-American War.
What were the two major reasons why the United States joined World War I to fight against the Germans?
- Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
- Zimmerman Telegram
How did the United States get enough people to fight in the army?
The US Government passed the Selective Service Act. This forced all men of certain ages to join the army.
This is also called a “draft”.
If you were drafted, then you got sent to war.
What was the Espionage Act?
It was a law passed by Congress and signed by President Wilson.
If you did anything that gave the Germans an advantage in the war, then you could get sent to jail.
This included talking bad about the US government or disagreeing with World War I
