Gerald Ford ran for President but lost in 1976. Who did he lose to?
Jimmy Carter
What should we know about Jimmy Carter?
He came after a lot of Presidents who had been caught lying. So he wanted to be as honest as possible with the American public.
How did Jimmy Carter try to be honest with the American people?
He told them about the problems that the USA faced
- Too many people are materialists
- Shortage of fuel is America’s own fault
- America needs to make its own energy
What problem did Jimmy Carter have with materialism?
He said too many Americans wanted to buy stuff just to have it, or to impress other people. That society was rejecting Jesus’s teachings about not making a God out of the stuff you own.
Yeah, Jimmy Carter was religious, but also a Democrat.
Why did Jimmy Carter blame the USA for its own fuel problem?
He said that the USA was too dependent on oil from other countries.
He also said the USA needed energy freedom. The USA would get energy freedom by creating more of its own energy.
How did Jimmy Carter imagine energy freedom?
He thought that the USA should research more solar and wind power so that the USA could generate fuel that was clean and free.
40 years ago, Jimmy Carter wanted to create solar panels and wind farms.
What is stagflation?
High unemployment, where a lot of people don’t have jobs
High inflation, where stuff costs more

During the Iranian Revolution, they kidnapped 66 American citizens and held 52 of them, hostage, for more than one year.
Did Jimmy Carter try to save the kidnapped Americans?
He ordered Operation Eagle Claw to rescue them, but it failed.
What major fuel problem did the USA have during Ford and Carter’s Presidencies?
Gas shortages. Meaning, there wasen’t enough gas for people to buy.
And you know what people do when they think there is a shortage of something?
They HOARD. HOARD. HOARD.
What does hoard mean?
It means that during the shortage of fuel, they would buy gas, even when they didn’t need it, so that they would always be prepared in case gas ran out.
What effect does hoarding gas have on the USA?
It means that when people went to buy gas, there were long lines of people trying to buy it.
What caused the shortages of gasoline?
Sort of important to know since the shortages of gasoline is what caused Americans to hoard gas
A group of countries called OPEC said they were refusing to sell any gasoline to the USA.
OPEC stands for
Organization of
Petroleum (oil)
Exporting
Countries
***exporting means selling your stuff to other countries. Since these countries make a lot of oil, they export(sell) their oil to other countries
Why did OPEC stop selling gas to the USA?
While FORD was President it was because the USA backed up this middle eastern country called Israel. So OPEC stopped selling oil
While CARTER was President, it was because the USA tried getting involved in the Iranian Revolution
