A

Golden Age of Black Culture. During this time period in US History, Black people became increasing participants in American culture

It’s called Harlem because in New York City there is a neighborhood called “Harlem” where a lot of these Black people lived

A

The KKK was a white supremacist organization, and during the 1920s, millions of Americans became official members.

Their strong presence in American cities, especially in the South, forced many Blacks to move to the North, during what was known as the Great Migration.

Who is Marcus Garvey?

A

A famous African-American thinker who thought that the solution to the problem of equal rights for Black people was to return to Africa.

To accomplish this, he wanted to buy a massive boat that could carry thousands of people at a time back to Africa. This boat was called the Black Star Steamship Line.

A

Sacco and Vanzetti were two immigrants who had come to the USA, and both of them were anarchists.

An anarchist is someone who doesn’t believe we should have a government.

Sacco and Vanzetti were accused of committing a robbery and 2 murders. Despite having no evidence presented against them, they were found guilty and executed by the government.

A

People were afraid that the immigrants who were coming into the USA during the 1920s might be communists.

Everyday citizens were accusing other Americans of being communists, but most of the people being targeted as communists were immigrants.

What’s a speakeasy?

A

Speakeasies were password-protected businesses that would illegally sell you alcohol. In order to enter the speakeasy, you needed to know the password.

What’s a flapper?

A

A flapper is a woman who likes to drink, smoke, and dance.

Why did society look down on flappers?

A

Because women were not supposed to “behave like men”. Women were supposed to stay home and take care of the kids, not go out with their friends to drink and smoke as men do.

What type of music would usually be playing in speakeasies?

A

Jazz Music.

Jazz Music was developed during the Harlem Renaissance and so it was the music that was most popular throughout the 1920s.

What type of people hated flappers and speakeasies?

A

People who considered themselves to be “Traditional”.

People who were “traditional” placed more importance over the family and felt that society was not doing good since many women were no longer acting proper.

What was an unintended consequence of the 18th amendment?

A

A rise in organized crime.

Organized crime, like the Mafia, became a problem because the Mafia started to sell alcohol illegally to the people who wanted to buy it. Using the money, the Mafia would buy guns and do drive-by shootings on their rivals who were trying to sell alcohol on their turf.

What is a bootlegger?

A

A bootlegger is someone who tried to hide the alcohol they are selling in underneath their pants in leather straps.

A

A laissez-faire approach to government.

Remember, laissez-faire is when the government DOES NOT get involved in the economy.

In other words, the government needs to let businesses do what they want because Freedom is the best way to live your life.

A

Warren G. Harding.

He wanted to let the American people know he wasn’t going to be a progressive president, he was going to bring back things to normal.

A

Although it happened after Warren G. Harding died, it was revealed that one of his secretaries was selling government land and keeping the money for himself.

A

He was the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on one trip.

What was the Scopes Trial about?

A

The Scopes Trial was a court case where a science teacher was being forced to pay a fine for teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

Its also called the Scopes Monkey Trial.

A

He created the medicine called antibiotics.

The first antibiotic created was called Penicillin.

Without Penicillin, bacterial infections were deadly, and even a little cut on your finger could kill you.
