Q

What happened after the Civil War?

A

President Lincoln got shot, so President Johnson stepped in and pardoned all the traitors who had fought against the US government during the Civil War.

After they got their pardons, many White people felt it necessary to hunt for Black people in the cities at night time, mostly in cities in the South where the police were also racist and would help in the murder and rapes.

Q

How did Radical Republicans defend Black people?

A

They took away the South’s ability to have its own government, and instead created “military districts” which were controlled by the US Military.

Radical Republicans basically replaced the corrupt police force with the US military which protected a lot of Black people.

Q

What is the 14th amendment?

A

It said that all citizens (including Black people) would be treated equally by the law.

It also made it so that citizens were any person who was born in the USA, so that way Black people would be automatically included.

Q

What is the 15th amendment?

A

It gave non-White men the power to vote. This was supposed to include Black, Latino, and Asian men, but Jim Crow White Supremacy would usually prevent them from being able to exercise their 15th amendment rights.

Q

Did governments try to make sure that the 14th and 15th amendments were being followed?

A

They did, right up until there was an election where Radical Republicans were no longer in power, and then the military removed itself from the South.

Once the military left the South, southern police and politicians worked together to oppress Black people through what is called Jim Crow White Supremacy

Q

When did Jim Crow White Supremacy finally end?

A

Well, it started right after the Civil War was over, and it lasted until the election of Nixon.

So about 75 years of Jim Crow White Supremacy. Racists still exist but for the most part, they operate in hiding.
