Workshop 3 Flashcards
1
Q
How is ethnicity defined
A
Ethnicity is the ethnic group or groups that people identify with or feel they belong to
2
Q
What are the three types of ethnicity output
A
Prioritised Output, Total Response Output, Sole/combination output
3
Q
Prioritised Output
A
Allocated to a single ethnic group using priority system
4
Q
Pros of Prioritised Output
A
- Data is easy to work with
- Sum of ethnic groups is total NZ pop
- Smaller ethnic groups aren’t swamped by NZ European ethnic group
5
Q
Cons of Prioritised Output
A
- causes bias in resulting stats
- over-represents some groups
- goes against self identification principle
6
Q
Total Response Output
A
Individual who indicate more than one ethnic group are counted more than once
7
Q
Pros of Total Response Output
A
- Represents all those who identify in any given ethnic group
- Doesn’t change the responses people give
8
Q
Cons of Total Response Output
A
- Sum of ethnic group populations “counts” will exceed total NZ population
- Difficulties in distribution of funding based on population numbers
- Difficulties in monitoring changes in ethnic composition of population
9
Q
Sole/Combination Outputs
A
Classified under the 9 groups
10
Q
Pros of Sole/Combination Outputs
A
- Does not change the responses that people give and reflects population diversity
- Actual population size
- Most flexible approach
11
Q
Cons of Sole/Combination Outputs
A
- New and untried
- Fail to include some ethnic groups
- Maori misidentified (record multiple ethnic groups)
- Managing data is complicated
