Worksheet 42-Batteries Flashcards
What are two classifications of batteries?
Primary and secondary
Which category of battery cannot be recharged?
Primary batteries cannot be recharged.
For a wet cell battery, what are the two elements that make up the electrodes?
The electrodes of a primary battery are constructed of carbon (anode) and zinc (cathode)
What is an atom called that is either positively or negatively charged?
An atom or molecule that has a positive or negative charge is called an ion.
What is the solution called that allows those electrons to flow?
Electrons will flow to and from the electrodes in a solution called electrolyte
How much voltage does a typical single dry cell battery produce?
1.5V
What happens to a lead acid battery when the unit is lead in a discharged state for a long period of time?
Lead acid battery will produce sulfate on the plates when left in a discharged state for too long.
What are two main elements in the construction of a Ni-Cad battery?
Nickel and Cadmium
What is the benefit that a Ni-Cad battery has over its lead-acid counterpart when it comes to voltage performance?
Ni-Cad battery can hold its maximum voltage longer before fully discharging.
What negative aspects do Ni-Cads have that a technician needs to be aware of when charging the cell?
Ni-Cad batteries are susceptible to thermal runaway during charging.
With no load applied to the battery, what is the reading called?
With no load applied, a voltage meter would read open circuit voltage (OCV).
With an OCV of 14.2VDC and a CCV of 11.6VDC and a load of 85A, what is the series equivalent resistance of the battery?
IR = OCV-CCV / Load
IR = 14.2V - 11.6V / 85A
IR = 0.03 ohms
What are two types of lead acid batteries that can be used in aviation?
Vented cell batteries and recombinant gas (sealed) batteries
When individual battery cells are connected in series what happens to the current and the voltage of the combined cells?
Batteries connected in series will increase the voltage while holding current output equal to one individual cell.
