Workplace Violence required steps:

Issue: Workplace Violence
Immediate Actions
- Stop the actions
- Separate the parties, tell them this is not acceptable behavior, and send to different parts of the station
- If they cannot be separated call 911
- Place units out of service
- Adjust staffing to maximize in service units
- If a weapon is involved, have police take custody of the weapon
- Determine if there are injuries, provide medical treatment
- Complete injury documentation per SOP 02.03.01 Personal Injury Reporting
Investigate (coordinate with police if necessary)
- Determine if Fitness for Duty is needed per SOP 02.04.03 Fitness for Duty
- Written statements from all parties and witnesses (can be done by Professional Standards Officer)
- Interview employees privately
- Advise that further acts of violence/retaliation will result in progressive discipline and will not be tolerated
- Review personnel files
- Check for damage to property/station
- Review SOP 02.00.14 Workplace Violence
Notify
- Battalion Management Team (BC and EMS Supervisor)
- Uniformed Fire Officer
- Police if needed
- Police Victim Services if needed
- EAP referrals for both employees
- Possibly EEO/Professional Standards Office
- Staffing coordinator (Ops406) if employees are not able to work
- Update telestaff/FOCUS
Document
- Supervisors notes (names, date, time)
- Personnel file of all parties involved
- Police Report
- FIN-03 Workplace Violence Incident Report Form
Follow up
- Progressive discipline based on findings
- Address with any witnesses why they did not intervene (or if they tried)
- Delegate training for the shift to LT or Master Technician on SOPs, station policies, and ways to prevent future occurrences
- Review training in 3 working days, have the training delivered in 6 working days
- Follow up with employees about the work environment periodically for next 2-3 months
- Contact Risk Management Division for shift training on workplace violence, prevention and consequences
