Issue: Employee exposure
Immediate Actions
- Ensure employee has properly cleaned skin/flushed mucus membranes
Investigate
- Were all department safety procedures followed?
- PIC Kit?
- Written statements from all parties and witnesses
- Review Exposure Control Manual Chapter 7
Notify
- Battalion Management Team (BC and EMS Supervisor)
- Safety Officer (from scene/hospital/upon returning to station)
- Designated Infection Control Officer
Document
- Supervisors notes (names, date, time)
- FRD-314 Infectious Disease Exposure Report
- Note in narrative of incident report “FF John Smith sustained an occupational exposure on incident number ####”
- On-line exposure report
- DO NOT make entry in log book
- Employer’s First Report of Accident on-line
- FRD-071 Employee’s Supervisor Report of Workplace Related Injury/Illness
Follow up
- Recommend progressive discipline to BC as appropriate
- Delegate training for the shift to LT or Master Technician on SOPs, station policies, and ways to prevent future occurrences
- Review training in 3 working days, have the training delivered in 6 working days
