Conformity
Adherence by members of a group to its norms.
Consensus
Method of collective decision-making in which the group only adopts a decision when every member agrees to support it.
Group cohesion/cohesiveness
Extent to which members of a group feel attracted to one another and/or top the groups goals and motivated to belong.
Group norms
Shared beliefs, attitudes, standards, and practices exhibited by and/or expected of all members of a group organization or social system.
Groupthink
Tendency in a cohesive work group under stress to suppress dissent and support an apparent, but false, consensus even though a majority privately opposes it.
Process gain
When actual team effectiveness exceeds a team’s expected, collective potential based on members’ combined capabilities, due to their interaction.
Process loss
When actual team effectiveness falls short of a team’s expected, collective potential based on members’ combined capabilities, due to their interaction.
Psychological safety
Members’ shared comfort in voicing dissent or disagreement, especially with the team leader, without fear of adverse consequences.
Social facilitation
Tendency to work harder and/or faster in the presence of other people than when alone.
Social loafing
Free-Riding; in a task-oriented group, exerting less effort toward group goals than other members do.
Work Group/team
Individuals who share responsibility for specific outcomes for their organization.
Work group types
- Management- manager or executive and other managers/supervisors who report directly to them.
- Production- Repeatedly produces a tangible product as in manufacturing.
Service - Conducts repeated, direct transactions with customers.
- Project- Multi-function group of specialists doing a one-time, limited duration task with unique output, like a product design, prototype, or start-up.
- Action- Experts with different specialties who cooperate in time-sensitive performance events involving adversaries, audiences, or adverse conditions, as in sports. oil-well firefighting, or musical concerts.
- Advisory- Assembled to give advice or solve a problem defined by a manager, as in employee selection committee.
Team effectiveness
Work groups’ overall success, including:
- Performance, that meets customers and managers standards.
- Group viability - continued willingness to cooperate and capability of performing in the future.
