Better-off married women just supervised their servants, while poorer married women worked as cleaners, street traders and factories

Single women worked as domestic servants, or emigrated (especially to the US)
What did nuns do for work in the 20th century?
Nuns were important for teaching and nursing, numbers in convents declined after 1960. The Catholic Church received criticism over the Magdalene laundries and the mother and baby homes
What role did women have in education?
Limited role in education, more girls in convent secondary schools, small numbers in colleges and universities
What role did women have in voting?
Women could not vote, or be elected to parliament, the suffragettes and the Irish Womens franchise league were opposed by Redmond and Carson
What role did women have in WW1
More jobs for women in factories, offices, banks, schools and hospitals became available, with the men at war. Many women widowed after the war. Women over 30 got the vote in 1918 because of their role in the war
