What were reasons for European integration?
- legacy of war: bringing countries together would prevent conflict
- the Cold War- only a united europe could compete with the two superpowers
- economics: europe needed to rebuild after WW2
Describe one way the EU has promoted international cooperation
In the 90s European leaders supported further integration as a response to the end of the Cold War. In 1992 they created the Maastricht Treaty, which was significant move towards European unity.
What were the terms of the Maastricht Treaty?
The treaty: created the EU, established the Euro (€), gave more power to the European Parliament and created a social charter for workers
What are the consequences of European integration?
Peace has been maintained in the EU, prosperity has increased, people are better protected by EU law. But some feel that the EU has moved further away from the people and they are losing their national identities within the EU
How has Ireland benefitted from being in the EU?
Move, work and live freely within the EU, received over 70 billion to improve infrastructure, more peace in Northern Ireland, and more protection because of EU laws
