A

- renaissance (new technology and ideas)
- church’s wealth (tithes)
- abuses in the church (nepotism, absenteeism)

Write an account of Martin Luther

A

- 1483-1546
- wrote out 95 theses and nailed them to Wittenberg church
- thought the church was exploiting people
- his ideas spread around Germany because of the printing press
- excommunicated in 1521
- diet of worms called and he was now an outlaw
- translated bible into German

What was the Catholic counter reformation?

A

- the church was worried about the Protestants
- they set up the ‘Courts of Inquisition’ which out anyone who was a threat to the church on trial
- jesuits set up to be missionaries and make schools

What were the results of the reformation?

A

- division between catholics and Protestants in Europe
- religious wars
- each side wanted more people to be in their church so they had to educate people to be literate
- Protestants didn’t like decorating churches while catholics decorated churches lavishly, rising the baroque movement in art
