Q

How does Qian Lian Si Wu Tang differ from Si Wu Tang?

A

Qin Lian is not used for either lack of blood or the qi/yang def blood def.
Used for when the YIN def and yang rising. The added bitter cold herbs (Huang Qin, Huang Lian) are draining. don’t want to drain when there is a deficiency, really - so need to have a yang excess to use this.
usually in blood def, the patient will feel cold - so if the patient is feeling heat - that indicates this.

Q

How does the addition of Suan Zao Ren and Mu Gua (and Gan Cao) change the action of Si Wu Tang? What is the focus of this formula?

A

Suan Zao Ren and Mu Gua are both sour - which indicates that they affect the LV. This formula is more nourishing, more soothing. Addresses the blood more from the liver perspective - when the Qi is disrupting and depletes the blood or a subtle blood def that is agitated by HT fire or rising yang.
This formula is cooler, more nourishing and not focused on the moving aspect.
