wk2 heritability,reflexes & instincts Flashcards
hps111
define “reflex
Ä behaviour we cannot control.
Simple, automatic and nearly instantaneous to the stimuli. eg. Knee jerk.
controlled by autonomic nervous system.
usually necessary for immediate survival(or derived from that purpose)
define ïnstinct”
more complex behaviour than a reflex.
innate. not learnt.
define “philopatry”
the tendency of an animal to remain in its home area, or in migratory species, to return to it.
What does comparative psychology compare?
Compares human and animal behaviours in the hope of better understanding ourselves
define “mammalian diving reflex
“Newborns react to cold air or water passing over face by slowing heart rate and apnoea.
What is “baby’s rooting reflex”?
something brushes baby’s cheek and it turns towards it and makes suckling motion.
What is the sucking reflex?
Baby suckles when something touches roof of its mouth
What is the “Palmar grasp reflex”?
baby grabs something that brushes its palm
What is the “Moro Reflex”?
Baby feels as if it is dropping through space, stretches out its arms, pulls them back to their chest, and cries
What is a theory?
An explanation of observations, and is consistent with all available observations.
What is a law?
A description of how a system works.
What is Ïndustrial melanism”?
Dark coloured arthropods (esp the Peppered Moth), became more frequent in the areas of high pollution.
What is “selection pressure”?
An environment is biased towards one characteristic becoming more frequent.
What are the general rules of the adaptive process of evolution?
- organisms reproduce, therefore population tends to increase.
- organisms inherit characteristics from their parents but there are some minor variations (eg.mutations).
- the environment creates pressures which influences survival or not.
- Better adapted organisms are more likely to survive.
- There must be some variability in an inherited trait in order for it to be selected for or not.
What is ärtificial selection”?
A selection process based on desired characteristics but not necessarily linked to survival.
