The first differentiations of psychology in emphasis are;
emphasis is biological, behavioural,cognitive or social.
What does the behaviourist approach focus on?
observable behaviours and their relationship with environmental factors
What does the cognitive approach focus on?
mental processes such as thinking, attention, memory,information processing etc.
What does social psychology focus on?
how we influence each other and operate in societies. eg.”norms”, culture,persuasion,conflict etc
What is personality psychology?
Is concerned with the ways that we are all different. Focuses on core personality traits and how these influence behaviour.
What is developmental psychology?
Is concerned with the way we change psychologically over our lifespan.
What is clinical psychology?
Focusses on psychological disorders eg. depression/anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, substance-use disorder, borderline personality disorder etc.
What areas does forensic psychology entail?
Relationship between psychology and the judicial system. Relates to eg.witness credibility, rehabilitation of offenders,competence to stand trial, risk assessment.
What does organisational and industrrial psychology focus on?
How psychological factors influence work performance,job satisfaction, job fitness and recruitment
Health psychology in a health-care setting might focus on;
helping people comply with medication regimes,motivating people to engage in healthier behaviours.
What factors do educational psychologists focus on?
Factors which may influence students’learning.
