Winter Ops Flashcards

1
Q

When should engine anti-ice be turned when on the ground?

A

whenever the temperature is 10°C or less when icing conditions exist or are anticipated to exist Immediately after engine start and remain on during all ground operations.
icing conditions are defined as:
1. visible moisture with 1 mile visibility or less
2. Ice, snow, slush or standing water is present on ramps taxiways or runways

Q

Under what cold conditions should the aircraft not be started without maintenance intervention

A

if the engine has been cold soaked for one hour or more with a temperature below -40°C Do not start the engine! Maintenance must heat the engine before starting.

Q

is it normal to have the oil filter bypass light come on during engine start in cold weather?

A

Yes, The oil pressure may go above normal range for a couple of minutes and trigger the light.

Q

if oil pressure remains above the normal range even after the oil temperature has stabilized what should be done?

A

Shut down the engine. In this case allow 10 to 15 minutes to pass until trying again. This will allow the internal heat distribution of the engine to warm the oil.

Q

Engine Runups- If OAT is 3 degrees C or below (and engine anti-ice is required) what must be done on the ground while taxing or standing?

A

Minimum 70% N1 for 30 seconds at least every 30 minutes. (if engine anti-ice is required that means that there is snow slush or standing water on the taxiways and runways)

Q

What is the recommended
1. stabilizer trim position
2. Pressurization mode selector position
3. outflow valve switch position
for securing the airplane at the end of a flight in the winter time?

A
  1. 4 units of trim - This prevents melting snow and ice from running into balance bay areas which can possibly freeze or lock controls
    • pressurization mode select- manual
  2. Outflow valve switch - Close
