Harrying of the north

.Began in Yorkshire then spread to Durham and Northumberland
.Also pushed armies south a little, down through the Midlands and to the Welsh border
.William burnt homes, destroyed crops, and killed farm animals as a way to punish them

A
.After the rebellions in 1069, William replaced English landowners with French ones
.25% of the land was now owned by 10 Norman barons
.Wessex, Mercia and Northumbria were replaced with smaller less powerful earldoms

A
Mutilating rebels, destroying villages, building new castles (like the 2 in York), confiscating lands and titles
