.King owned all the land
.He gave it to his tenants-in-chief in return for them to provide men for an army 40 days a year
.The tenants-in-chief gave land to their knights who in return agreed to do military service for their lord
.Knights gave most of their land to local people so they could grow their own food
.The local people did work on the demesne (kings land) 2 or 3 days a week

Earls, bishops, or abbots
How many knights could the tenants-in-chief raise?
4,000-5,000 which was more reliable and faster
What happened if a tenant-in-chief did something wrong?
.If they rebelled or failed to deliver their side of the agreement they had to pay a penalty (a forfeiture) and their land would be forfeit (taken back)
