He had two bishoprics, church law said you could only hold one. He was Bishop of Winchester and Archbishop of Canterbury
Who replaced Stigand and when?
1070, Lanfranc was appointed as the Archbishop of Canterbury by William. He was already abbot of Williams great church of St Stephens in Normandy
What was Normanisation and example
Bringing the church completely under the norman control, every bishop except one came from Normandy and other parts of France
What did Lanfranc do about the role of Archbishops?
He made the Archbishop of Canterbury more superior than the one in York
Since normanisation what did every archbishop have?
an archdeacon
What is an archdeacon?
They policed parts of bishoprics, making sure priests were carrying out services and responsibilities
What did Lanfranc order in 1975?
No new priests could be married
What did Lanfranc introduce?
Church courts
What is a church court?
Courts that are set up to deal with religious or moral crimes, such as blasphemy or adultery
What did they build/rebuild after normanisation?
Cathedrals were built and they rebuilt Canterbury Cathedral, taller, powerful and commanding to symbolize and showcase Norman power
What happened to monks?
Monasteries were increased, monks were to be well educated so they can influence and educate those who were not churchmen
What did Norman bishops do that caused outrage?
removed relics and bones of English saints from cathedrals
What happened to Glastonbury Abbey in 1083?
.It tried to oppose when Norman Thurstan insisted on Norman services, Thurstan sent his knights into the church, 3 monks were killed
