.The 2 English nobles fled Williams court and began to gather allies against William, including Welsh princes
.William led an army north, building castles in Warwick, Nottingham, and York
.He destroyed housing and crops as punishment and Edwin and Morcar quickly surrender
Why was Morcar annoyed before the revolt of him and Edwin?
.He seemed to have been replaced as earl of Northumbria and Edwin had been promised one of Williams daughters

.William had sent a Norman army north to take control of the north, but they were attacked in Durham and their leader, Robert Comyn, was burned to death
.This gave new life to the northerners and they advanced on York, Edgar joined from Scotland

.A rebellion broke out in York, encouraged by the likelihood of Danish support
.Edgar moved down from Scotland and with his army seized control of York

.William and his army stormed north, the English fled and the Danes stayed on their ship
Hereward the Wake and the rebellions at Ely

.King Swein brought a fleet to England, based around Ely
.Hereward emerged as the leader of the English rebels
.He lead an attack on Peterborough Abbey as the abbot had been replaced by a Norman
.1071 Morcar joined
.William paid the Danes to leave
.William surrounded the Isle of Ely and built a causeway by tying small boats together
.Hereward escaped but Morcar was imprisoned for life
What was Ely then?
A large island surrounded by water and marshland
What happened to some of the rebels after the rebellions and why?
.Some had their hands and feet cut off to warn anyone else from considering rebelling
