BIOFILM FORMATION TIMELINE
What is step 1 of biofilm formation?
Pellicle forms first on the tooth, providing bacteria a surface to attach to
What is step 2 of biofilm formation?
Within 2 hours, bacteria is loosely bound to the pellicle
What is step 3 of biofilm formation?
Bacteria continues to spread throughout the mouth and multiply
What is step 4 of biofilm formation?
Microcolonies are formed; streptococci secrete a protective layer (also known as the ‘slime layer’)
What is step 5 of biofilm formation?
Within 2 days microcolonies double in mass and form complex groups with metabolic advantages (plaque is clinically visible at this point)
What is step 6 of biofilm formation?
Biofilm develops a primitive circulatory system
