What needs to happen on diagnosis?
Causative organism.

Notifiable disease
Bordetella pertussis
Most infants should be vaccinated against.

Three phases
A
Catarrhal, parosyzmal, convalescent.
1-2 weeks, 2 month then 3 month.

Catarrhal phase
A
Dry cough, rhinitis, sore throat, conjunctivitis, fever.

Paroxysmal
A
Whoop cough. Complications most likely here.
Of which are seizures, pneumonia, otitis media.

Convalescent phase
A
Cough dies down along with other symptoms.

Investigation
When to admit?
A
PCR test via nasopharyngeal swab/aspirate.
Antipertussis allergen (IgG)
Admit if younger than 6 months and emergency paediatric signs.

Management
A
If less than 21 days of cough, clarithromycin.
