Definition
Rubella (also known as German measles) is a viral infection spread by direct contact with an infected person or droplet spread from respiratory secretions — it is preventable by vaccine.
The risk of serious congenital defects is highest early in pregnancy (before twenty weeks gestation
Congenital rubella syndrome
Presentation
Rash spreading from face and neck down to trunks and generalised.
Lymphadenopathy, arthralgia,
Low-grade fever (<39oC), headache, malaise, nausea, mild upper respiratory tract symptoms and non-purulent conjunctivitis.
Investigations
Immediate oral fluid sample needed for testing.
Management
Let local health protection team know of infection. Once swab test kits obtained, test patient.
Infection should die down in 7 days. Stay away from school 5 days from start of rash
Inform local staff of disease.
Pregnant woman before 20weeks need to have specialist referral.
