Definition

Common Age gap

A

Seizure accompanied with a fever without infection.

Simple febrile is tonic clonic seizure lasting less than 15 minutes. Doesn’t recur in 24 hours.

12-18 months is peak.

Immediate Management

A

Record keeping
Keep child safe (keep head away from hard objects, cushion hands from injury)
Keep airway clear
After episode, place in recovery position

If prolonged for more than 15 minutes, give buccal midazolam or PR diazepam

If seizure continues after 10 minutes, then call ambulance.

MUST LOOK FOR MENINGISM

Causes

A

Otitis media, tonsilitis, viral infection

Meningitis, post immunisation, gastroenteritis.

Signs of Meningism

A

Non-blanching rash, photophobia, neck stiffness, headache, altered level consciousness

Investigation

A

FBC, UandE, ESR/CRP, Glucose, clotting.

Urine culture/dip is <18month.
