XIV. Cattle on the Plains
Spanish brought cattle over in the 1500s for food, Texas settlers started rounding up longhorns ($3-4 in Texas, $80 in the North), Ranchers would travel with the cattle to the railroad where it would then be in the cow town, Chicago
Open Range
a large area of grazing land without fences or other barriers
Stockyard

XVII. Problems with the Cattle Kingdom
crime grew in the cities that were growing b/c of the cattle, law enforcements like the Legendary Lawmen (Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and Bass Reeves), barely any gunfights would occur, cattle rustlers often tried to take cattle on the long drives
XVIII. The Cattle Kingdom Ends
it collasped quickly b/c they expanded their herds too quickly, grasslands were overgrazed, and prices were falling, bad weather and development of barbed fences also killed a lot of cattle/limited them
Interstate Commerce Commission
a federal agency created to regulate railroads
Interstate Commerce
transportation of products, services, or money across state borders
XIX. Problems with the Railroad
Farmers had problems with the prices, The National Grange tried to lower the prices, states tried to limit prices b/c farmers were storing grain instead of shipping it
XX. Regulating Railroads
Wabash vs Illinois
ruled individual states couldn’t control commerce between others states, Interstate Commerce Act (1866) gave the federal government this power,
- railroads must give reasonable prices
- sets up Interstate Commerce Commission
