the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality
XI. The New South
Southerners believed that they should develop their industries in tobacco, cotton, and lumber, saying that they lost the war b/c of it, poor farmers and blacks didn’t benefit from it
XII. Plessy vs. Ferguson (1898)
Homer Plessy was 7/8 white who was sat in a whites-only train car, violated the Separate Car Act, punished with $25 fine or 20 days in jail, made the law “Separate but Equal” constitutional “legalized racism”
Lynching
putting to death by illegal action of a mob
Etiquette
the customary code of polite behavior in a particular group
XIII. Jim Crow Laws
Discriminatory against blacks, leaders wanted to prevent southerners from holding political power because they were firm white supremacy believers
XIV. Violence in the South
those who were accused of crimes were lynched, race riots broke out, supporters of jim crow overthrew an elective in Wilmington, NC through intimidation and mob violence of the black population
Exoduster
name given to African Americans who migrated from states along the Mississippi River to Kansas
Buffalo Soldiers
black soldiers who mainly served on the Western frontier following the American Civil War
XV. Exoduster Movement
Many freedmen moved out of the South during reconstruction, most moved west in Kansas in the 1870s
- about 20,000 freedmen left the south to escape poverty and racism, finding a sense of freedom and ability to be successful
- white southerners tried to stop them from leaving b/c they weren’t trying to lose their cheap labor
XVI. Buffalo Soldiers
black veterans of the Civil War and former slaves moved west to protect the vast territory
- they were labeled buffalo soldiers when they fought as a segregated unit in the military against the native tribe groups, Apache and Cheyenne (1867-1896)
- protected national parks from wildfires and poachers
