I. Postwar Reconstruction
A
- Nearly 4 million slaves were freed but didn’t have jobs or an education
- the South’s economy collasped with most battles taking place there (except Antietam and Gettysburg)

Northerners believed that Lincoln’s plan for reconstruction (1863) was too lenient and feared that the South would try to prevent ex-slaves from getting civil rights

III. Lincoln’s Assassination
A
- April 14, 1865
- Booth (who was a confederate) being a part of a famous acting family, was able to get close to the president without suspicions and killed Lincoln as part of a larger conspiracy to take out other high-ranking officials
- Booth was killed in his attempt to escape
- Nation mourned Lincoln’s death and southern democrat Andrew Johnson took over
(his home state seceded but he stayed loyal to the country)
