Wellness and Activity 1 Flashcards
define physical activity
any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure, and increases heart rate and breathing
Define exercise
planned, structured , and repetitive physical activity done to improve and maintain one or more components of health
Explain the three different intensities of Physical activity
Light-Intensity PA (LPA)
- > does not result in sweat production or shortness of breath
Moderate-Intensity PA (MPA)
- > intense enough to elevate heart rate
- > a person can talk but not sing during activities of this intensity
Vigorous-Intensity PA (VPA)
- > heart rate increases substantially, body temp increases quickly and a person connot say more than a few words without pausing for breath
Define physical inactivity
an insufficient physical activity level to meet present physical activity recommenations
What is sedentary behaviour
any waking behaviour characterized by an energy expenditure <1.5 metabolic equivalents (MET’s) while in a sitting, reclining, or lyding posture
What are the age classification of the 24-hour movement guidlines
What are the four categories of the Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines
- > sweat (Moderate-Vigorous PA)
- > step (light PA)
- > sleep
- > sit
List the 24-hour movement guidelines for children 5-17
Sweat
- > 60 mins/day of moderate-vigorous activity at least 3 days per week
Step
- > serveral hours of a variety of light physical activities
Sleep
- > uninterrupted 9-11 hours of sleep for ages 5-13 and 8-10 hours per night for ages 14-17
Sit
- > no more than 2 hours per day of recreational screen time
physical activity guidelines for adults 18-64
- > at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic PA per week (10 mins or more per session)
- > beneficial to add muscle and bone strengthening activities using major muscle groups at least 2 days per week
what percentage of children are meeting the daily PA requirements for their age group
33%
boys vs girls daily physical activity levels
boys tend to be more physically active than girls, however PA decreases with age at around the same rate for boys and girls
Have boys and girls yearly physical activity levels significantly differed in recent years
No they have remained around the same
What percentage of adults meet the physical activity guidelines
2 in 10 (16.5%)
- > no significant differences between men (18%) and women (15%)
