Weight Management 2 Flashcards
the key challenge in weight loss management
general trend in weight loss and weight loss management
nike swoop
- > weight loss phase is relatively quick and the weight re-gain is slower but it still happens
• lower line of graph is with specific interventions to try and keep weight off and higher is the control where they didn’t really try
what are the five overarching themes from “distinct explanation” theories
- Maintenance Motives: behaviour satisfaction, enjoyment, congruence with identity
- Habits and responses to cues
- Self-regulation and coping with barriers
- Psychological and physical resources
- Contextual influences: social and environmental
Explain maintenance motives
• people tend to maintain their behaviour if they…
- > are satisfied with behavioural outcomes
- > enjoy engaging in the behaviour
- > behaviour is congruent with identity, beliefs and values
explain habits and responses to cues
• people are effectove with maintaing behaviours which have become habitual and are supported by automatic responses to relevant cues
explain self regulation
• people tend to maintain behaviour if they successfully monitor and regulate the newly adopted behaviour and have effective strategies to overcome barriers to the performance of the new behaviour
explain psychological and physical resources
• people are successful in maintaining behaviour in their psychological and physical resources are plentiful
explain Contextual influences
- a supportive environment and social support are important for behaviour maintenance
- people tend to maintain behaviour which is in line with relevant social changes
list the two possible ways of using BCTs for maintenance
1. Phase specific BCTs
- initiation only (i.e. information)
- maintenance only (i.e. relapse prevention)
2. Same BCTs throughout weightloss and WLM
- same techniques delivered in the same way (i.e. self-monitoring)
- same technique delivered differently (i.e. goal setting)
