Weekend Revision (Chapter 4 - Paper 1) Flashcards
What are the benefits of networking?
Transfer files quickly and easily.
Share peripherals and internet connections
Access files from any computer on a network
Control security, software updates and backups via a server
Communicate with each other via email and social media.
What is a LAN?
Covers a single site within a small geographical area.
All hardware is owned by the organisation using it
What is a WAN?
Connects LAN’s together over a larger geographical area.
Leased from telecommunication companies
Connected with telephone lines, fibre optic cables or satellite links.
Disadvantages of networking?
Increased security risk to data.
Malware and viruses can spread very easily between computers.
If a server fails, the computers connected to it may not work
Computers may run slower if there is many devices connected.

What is bandwidth?
How much data that can be sent and received successfully in a specified period of time measured in bits per second.
What offers higher bandwidth, fiber optic or copper and why?
Fiber Optic due to it not being affected by radiation.
What offers higher bandwidth, wireless or wired?
Wired Connections.
What can increase the error rate?
Less reliable connections
Data must be resent until it arrives correctly.
Length of cable
Quality of signal.
What is latency?
Term given to delay between something being sent and received.
How may you encounter latency?
Not using switches appropriately.
Distance it must travel.
What are the advantages of the client server model?
Easier to manage security files.
Easier to make backups of all shared data
Easier to install software updates to all computers.
What are the disadvantages of client server model?
Can be expensive to set up and maintain.
Server is a single point of failure
What is unique about the Peer to Peer model?
A peer is a computer on a network and is equal to all other peers.
What are the advantages of Peer to Peer model?
Very easy to maintain
No dependency on a single computer
Cheaper to set up
What are the disadvantages of peer to peer model?
Network is less secure
Users need to manage own backups.
What does every computer connecting to a network need?
Network Interface Card (NIC)
What does a wireless access point do (WAP)?
Allows wireless enabled devices to connect to a network without cables.
What does a switch do?
Sends data between computers on a LAN
Segments the network by forwarding traffic to the correct location.
What does a router do?
Sends data between networks
Creates a WAN from a number of LAN’s
Uses internet protocol address to route traffic
How does fibre optic transmit data?
Using light, covers much longer distances and higher bandwidth than copper.
What is the largest example of a WAN?
The Internet
What functions do web servers carry out?
Hosting websites
Dealing with client requests.
What is the cloud?
A remote server which is accessed by the internet.
