How can a router form a LAN?
A router can form a LAN by connecting devices within a building.
What is the job of the server?
Provides services to client computers (print servers, mail servers)
What are the different speeds and levels of Cat Cables
Cat 5 - Slowest Cat 6 - Faster Cat 7 - Faster Cat 8 - Faster Cat 9 - Fastest
What does a switch do?
A switch stores the MAC addresses of devices on a network and filters data packets to see which devices have asked for them.
What is a switch?
An active device that receives data packets and looks at who they are before sending to the intended user. Very quick and secure.
What does a Hub do?
A hub broadcasts data to all devices on a network.
What is a hub?
A passive device that sends data packets to every device that is connected to it.
What is a bridge used for.
Bridges are used to connect two separate LAN networks.
What does a Modem do?
A modem enables a computer to connect to the internet over a telephone line. It converts digital signals from a computer to analog signals that are sent down the line.
What is a gateway?
A computer that sits between different networks or applications.
What does the Gateway do?
Converts info, data or other communications from one protocol or format to another.
What does WAP stand for?
Wireless access points
What do WAPs do?
required to connect to a network wirelessly, usually built in to the broadband router. Connects devices using WiFi to the network.
What is a NIC?
Network interface card -small circuit boards that connect to the motherboard.
What do NIC’s do?
Enable desktop and laptop computers to connect to a network.
What is a repeater?
Electronic device that receives a signal and retransmits it.
What does the repeater do?
Extend transmissions so the signal can cover longer distances or be received on the other side of a obstruction.
What is the internet?
Collection of inter-connected networks.
What is the world wide web?
Information system of interlinked web pages and other resources accessed from a web browser (e.g safari, chrome)
What does the world wide web do?
Makes use of HTTP to send and receive data.
