Week 9 - SLW Flashcards

1
Q

Over what type of line can you use SLW? (P1 Reg 1)

A

Double line

When one line of a double line becomes blocked, SLW by pilotman allows trains to travel over the other line in either direction

Q

What do you need to remind a pilotman of when making the arrangements for SLW? (P1 Reg 2.2.2)

A
  • Controlled level crossings which are protected by signals
  • Automatic level crossings
  • Barrow or foot crossings with white light indications
  • Unworked points
  • Intermediate signal boxes which are closed and what time they will open
  • Any ESR’s / TSR’s affecting either the single line or any train returning to the proper line
  • If the obstructed line is

1) Protected by a line blockage as per TS1 Reg 13.2
2) Under T3 possession
3) Occupied by a failed train

Q

When can you divide the single line into two sections for wrong direction movements? (P1 Reg 3.6)

A
  • The arrangement is authorised in the SBSI’s
  • The arrangement is authorised by the NR Area Ops Manager
  • An intermediate handsignaller is appointed as shown in the SBSI’s

Q

What is the restriction with SLW where the protection for a line blockage is in the same signal section as the crossover? When does this not apply? (P1 Reg 3.3)

A
  • When the obstructed line is protected by a line blockage, SLW must not be introduced if the line blockage protection is in the same signal section as the crossover
  • This does not apply if the line blockage is beyond the facing crossover that will be used for SLW

Q

When do you need to arrange for an LXA at an AHBC crossing within the SLW section? (TS9 Reg 3.2)

When do you need to arrange for an LXA at a CCTCV crossing within the SLW section? (TS9 Reg 6.9)

A
  • When the AHBC crossing does not have wrong direction controls
  • Always for a CCTV crossing, unless authorised in the SBSI’s

Q

When does a handsignaller not need to be appointed? (P1 Reg 3.5.3)

A
  • A main aspect signal which applies to trains leaving the single line is provided at the crossover

or

  • The pilotman travels with every train over the single line in the wrong direction

Q

During SLW the visibility is poor, when does a handsignaller not have to be provided? (P1 Reg 3.5.4)

A

When a main aspect signal which applies to trains leaving the single line is provided at the crossover

Q

When controlling wrong direction movements through the SLW section who do you issue instructions to? What do you need to make sure that they understand? (P1 Reg 3.5.2)

A
  • You issue instructions to the pilotman and to handsignallers
  • You must tell the handsignaller if the instructions for the train movement has been given to the train driver
  • You must make sure that the pilotman and handsignaller understand what to tell drivers and to work only to your instructions

Q

What is the speed limit for the first and subsequent trains travelling in the wrong direction when passing over power operated points that are facing the movement in a SLW section that have not been secured and padlocked? (P1 Reg 3.7.3 and P1 Reg 6.2.c)

A
  • 15mph for all trains

16
Q

Who authorises the withdrawal of SLW? (P1 Reg 14.1)

A

Only the pilotman

18
Q

How far does the line need to be clear when allowing a train to enter the single line in the wrong direction if there is a main aspect signal to control the movement through the crossover at the end of the single line? (TS2 Reg 9.2.1)

A

When the line is clear up to and including the point 183m beyond that signal

19
Q

How far does the line need to be clear when allowing a train to enter the single line in the wrong direction if there is a a handsignaller opposite the signal protecting the crossover? (TS2 Reg 9.2.2)

A

When the line is clear up to and including the point 183m beyond the handsignaller

20
Q

How far does the line need to be clear when allowing a train to enter the single line in the wrong direction if there is no main aspect signal to control the movement through the crossover and no handsignaller present? (TS2 Reg 9.2.3)

A

Except during poor visibility:

  • If the crossover is facing the movement, the crossover must be reversed and the line is clear up to and including the overlap of the next signal beyond
  • If the crossover is trailing the movement, the crossover is correctly set and the line is clear to a point 400m beyond

(During poor visibility you require either a handsignaller or a main aspect to control the movement)

21
Q

What train movements can be started in SLW without the pilotman present? (P1 Reg 5.2)

A
  • A movement to / from an unaffected route at a junction at the end of the single line
  • To pass through a trailing crossover which is on the approach to the obstruction
  • An assisting train may enter or foul the single line, as long as the pilotman has given permission
22
Q

What train movements can you authorise without the pilotman’s permission? (P1 Reg 5.2)

A
  • A movement to / from an unaffected route at a junction at the end of the single line
  • A movement to pass through a trailing crossover which is on the approach to the obstruction
