Week 6 - Wrong Direction Movement Flashcards
What is a wrong direction move?
A movement when a train is travelling in the direction of travel which:
- is not the normal direction of travel for that line
And
- for which no signal or signalled route is available to be set
When can a wrong-direction movement, for which no signal or signalled route is available to be set, be authorised? (TW7 Reg 1.1)
CROWEFLOSSER:
- Cannot continue forward and has to return because it has failed, or it cannot be driven from the cab at the leading end
- Return from or proceed towards a line blocked by an accident, failure, obstruction, or other exceptional incident
- Overrun a platform as long as the overrun is not more than 400m (400yds) beyond the platform
- Wrong route at a junction
- Engineering train is to move towards or from a line under possession
- Front portion of a divided train is to return to the rear portion
- Light locomotive or multiple-unit train (empty or loaded) is to proceed over the affected or unaffected line to assist a failed train
- OTM working in section to return to the published start mileage
- Shunting movement is to move through points worked by a ground frame
- SLW
- Engineering train or OTM working in a PZ
- Rail grinder to return to extinguish a fire
Who can authorise a wrong-direction move? (TW7 Reg 1.2)
- Signaller
- Pilotman or Handsignaller acting on the Signallers instructions
Does a Signaller require authority from Control before authorising a wrong-direction move? (TW7 Reg 1 and TS2 Reg 3.6)
No, unless they are authorising a movement for working in the wrong direction, and then they’ll need approval from the SSM or Control
Before authorising a wrong direction movement what must you do to make the line safe? (TW7 Reg 2.1)
PUBAGS:
- Points are in the required position and locked by facing point locks (where provided)
- Unworked points are secured
- Barriers or gates at any controlled level crossings are closed to road traffic
- any AHBC without wrong-direction controls is locally operated
- any Ground-frame release giving access to the route is in ‘normal’ unless it needs to be operated for the movement
- Protecting Signals to danger with reminder appliances applied
Where points are within the route for a wrong-direction movement, what must you do before you authorise the movement? (TW7 Reg 2.2)
- You must use the individual points controls to set points in the required position
- Ask a competent person (if present) to check the route setting
- Stop any train on an adjacent line which could be fouled if the route is set incorrectly
What is the clearance distance for a wrong-direction movement? (TW7 Reg 2.3)
400 m (440 yards)
What instructions must be given to the driver before authorising a wrong-direction movement? (TW7 Reg 3)
WHUPPA:
- What is required
- How far the movement will go
- Unworked points have been secured
- Points and crossings should be checked (where possible) that they are set correctly for the movement
- Proceed at caution
- Arrangements at level crossings
When can you release points that have been secured for a wrong-direction movement? (TW7 Reg 4.1)
- Once the movement has passed clear of of any points in the route
Or
- The movement has passed clear of the track circuit controlling these points
Can a wrong-direction movement be made at an AHBC that is NOT under local control? (TS9 Reg 3.2)
Only if the AHBC has wrong-direction controls and the movement is not starting between the wrong-direction speed restriction board and the crossing
What must we tell the driver of an AHBC under local control before authorising a wrong-direction movement? (TW7 Reg 4.2)
- The crossing is under local control
- Approach the crossing at caution
- Only pass over the crossing when given the green handsignal by the attendant
If there is no attendant present at a CCTV crossing, how do we instruct the driver to make a wrong-direction movement over the crossing? (TS9 Reg 6.8.2)
- Tell the driver to stop opposite the signal or block marker protecting the crossing on the other line
- Make sure the barriers are lowered and the crossing is clear
- Approach the crossing at caution
- Only pass over if it is safe to do so
If there is an attendant present at a CCTV crossing, how do we instruct the driver to make a wrong-direction movement over the crossing? (TS9 Reg 6.8.1)
- Tell the driver the crossing is being locally operated
- Approach the crossing at caution
- Only pass over when given a green handsignal by the attendant
When a wrong-direction move is required but there is no cab at the leading end of the movement, when is the driver allowed to drive from another cab? (TW1 Reg 26.2)
When a competent person is available to control the movement
When is the clearance distance not required for a wrong-direction move? (TW7 Reg 2.3)
If the movement is proceeding:
- To a stationary train or vehicle
- To the point of obstruction
- To the detonators protecting a possession
- Beyond the point at which it will return to a line in the right direction
