Week 5 - Train Failure Flashcards
What must we agree with the driver when they are reporting that their train has failed? (M2 Reg 1.2)
- The exact location of the failed train
- That the failed train will not be moved
- The type of assisting train that is required
- The direction from which it is needed
What must we do once we’re informed of a failed train?
- Inform Control and arrange assistance
- Advise other signallers involved and reach a clear understanding about what is to happen
- Record the details in the TRB
Before allowing the assisting train to enter the section where must the driver of the failed train be? (M2 Reg 3.2)
- Conducting the assisting train, or
- Waiting at the protection point to meet the assisting train, or
- Proceeding immediately to the protection point
If the driver of the failed train is not at the protection point what must we do? (M2 Reg 3.2)
- Ask the driver of the failed train how long it will take to get to the protection point
- Wait a suitable time before authorising the driver of the assisting train to enter the section
What must we tell the driver of the assisting train? (M2 Reg 3.2)
- Location of the failed train
- Location of the assistance protection
- Location where the assisting train will be met by the driver of the failed train
- Location where the failed train must be taken
What is the standard arrangement for assistance protection? (M2 Reg 1.5)
- 3 detonators
- 20m (20yds) apart
- 300m (300yds) from the failed train in the direction from which the assisting train will approach
When must the assistance protection be placed by a stop signal or block marker? (M2 Reg 1.5)
- The signal or block marker is less than 300m from where the failed train is standing
- The signaller has confirmed that this stop signal or block marker is protecting the failed train
When is the assistance protection not required? (M2 Reg 1.5)
When permissive working is in operation
What should a driver do if the assistance protection falls within a tunnel? (M2 Reg 3.1)
- Place the detonators within the tunnel
- Continue through the tunnel and wait at the far end
The driver of the failed train must wait by the assistance protection, except when? (M2 Reg 3.1)
- They still need to contact the signaller
- The detonators are placed in a tunnel, in which case the driver waits at the far end of the tunnel
- They need to carry out emergency protection
What must the driver of the failed train do as the assisting train approaches? (M2 Reg 3.1)
Display a hand danger signal
When does the driver of a failed train need to place emergency protection? (M2 Reg 2.1)
- When the signaller cannot be contacted
AND
- The train has failed within a TBW or ESW section
Where is emergency protection placed? (M2 Reg 2.2)
2 km (1.25 miles) from the failed train {3 detonators 20m apart}
What should a driver of a failed train do if they reach a tunnel before reaching the full protection distance when placing emergency protection? (M2 Reg 2.2)
- Place 3 detonators 20m apart at the tunnel entrance
- If the full protection distance falls within the tunnel, they must continue to the far end of the tunnel and place 3 detonators 20m apart there
What do you need to instruct the driver of an assisting train when there is a tunnel in the occupied signal section? When does this not apply? (TS2 Reg 7.1)
- You must instruct the driver of any train proceeding on an adjacent line to proceed through the tunnel at caution
- You do not need to do this if you know the tunnel is clear and the person carrying out the protection is not in the tunnel
