Prejudice
An unfavourable attitude towards a social group and its members

Transmission of prejudice

Why do stigmas persist
1) Decrease in the value of a group
2) Downward comparison target
Transmissions from parents
- Prejudices are not born but learned
ex: 5-10 English children in the 1980s who liked more French and Spanish more than Italian and German
Sex stereotype show that
Both men and women believe that
- men are competent and independent
- women are warm and expressive
Age stereotypes in the workplace
- Poor performance
- Resistance to change
- Lower ability to learn
- (Youngers) are Less commited
Stereotype threat
feeling that we will be judged and treated according to the
stereotypes of our group, and that we will confirm these stereotypes
through our behaviour
3 stages of stereotype threats
- Awareness of negative judgement
- Focusing on the
stereotype - Behaving according to the stereotype
Superordinate goal
Leads to an increase in collaboration and improvement in attitude towards other group when goal is achieved
But more negative attitute towards other group if goal is not achieved
