An attempt to alter someone;s attitude or behaviour (power in motion).
Contingencies:
- Comparative status.
- Cultural values.
Define the 8 hard soft methods of influence

Hard tactics, behavioural change by applying power:
- Silent authority - legitimate power without referencing
- Assertiveness - coercive power through pressure or threats.
- Information Control - distributes info to reframe situation
- Coalition Formation When people lack sufficient power alone to influence others in the organization, they might form a coalition
- Upward appeal - support from higher authority
Soft tactics – personal sources of power
- Persuasion - argument changes attitudes and behaviour
- Ingratiation / impression mment - targeted attempt to be liked
- Exchange- promising benefits for compliance
Define organisatoinal politics
self- serving behaviors undertaken at the expense of others
Discuss outcomes of those experiencing politics in an org
Decreased: • job satisfaction • organizational commitment • organizational citizenship • task performance
