Why do we need nonverbal communication?

A
  1. Expressing intimacy: touch, gaze, facial expressions and distance.
  2. Establishing dominance and status: gestures and posture
  3. Providing information about inner mental states: facial expression
  4. Regulating verbal conversation: gestures and mutual gaze
  5. Directing other’s behaviour: gestures such as pointing and gaze

What is the continuum of behavioural control?

A
  1. AUTOMATIC: sleeping, breathing standing
  2. Habbit addiction ‘‘drives’’ ‘‘emotions
  3. Decision making, reasoning, motivation, ‘self-regulation’
  4. CONTROLLED: Rationallity

1 and 2 = automatic 3 and 4 = controlled

A

Non-verbal language is more immediate and automatic.

Why is gaze important

A

Nonverbal language is more ambiguous (e.g. gaze); therefore needs more contextual processing.
-Nontheless, individuals accurately percieve a variety of personal and social attributes
