- Amiguous ‘‘awkward’’ transitional time between childhood and adulthood
- Popular in late 1940s, US marketing neologism alongside extension of school careers
- Associated with rebellion and experimentation
- forming of subcultures - companies catered to pop-culture preferences
How is the teenage brain like?
maturational imbalance model
Deficits in:
* impulse control
* risk management
* emotional regulation
* delayed gratification (will power)
* resistance to peer pressure
Also is relatively high in plasticity.
Many cognitive control factors mature in mid-teens, but the brain is continually growing.
What is language and sleep like in teenagers?
LANGUAGE: 15-16 year olds, important to accent and language shifts (80% of them)
SLEEP: Teenagers need to sleep 2 hours later according to their clocks
What does the development of the PREFRONTAL CORTEX promote?
- Enchanced abstract and crtitical thought
- A period of social (peer) learning in all highly social species
