WEEK 9 MM OF PERINEUM FINISHED Flashcards
What are the muscles of the perineum?
Levator ani plus coccygeus
What is the function of the pernineal muscle?
Help to resist intra-abdominal pressure and support pelvic viscera
What muscles make up levator ani?
Puborectalis
Pubococcygeus
Iliococcygeus
Levator ani OIN
O - body of the pubis, obturator fascia, ischial spine
I - Perineal body, coccyx, anococcygeal ligament, walls of the prostate / vagina, rectum and anal canal.
N - S4 nerve to levator ani
Coccygeus OIN
O - ischial spine
I - inferior end of sacrum and coccyx
N - S4 nerve to levator ani
Bulbospongiosus OIAN males
O - Median raphe, ventral surface of the bulb of the penis and perineal body
I - Corpora spongiosum and cavernosa and the fascia of the bulb of the penis
A - Supports the perineal body. Assists erection (pushes blood into the penis and stops venous blood leaving the penis) and expelling the last drops of urine and semen
N - perineal branch of the pudendal nerve S2-S4
Bulbospongiosum OIAN females
O - Perineal body
I - Fascia of the corpus cavernosa
A - Supports the perineal body. Sphincter of the vagina, assists erection of the clitoris.
N - perineal branch of the pudendal nerve S2-S4
Ischiocavernosus OIAN
O - Internal surface of the ischiopubis ramus and ischial tuberosity
I - Crus of the penis or clitoris
A - Maintains erection of the penis or clitoris by pushing blood into the body of the penis and the clitoris and by compressing outflow veins.
N - Perineal branch of the pudendal nerve S2-S4
What are the deep and superficial transverse perineal muscles? OIAN
O - Internal surface of the ischiopubic ramus and ischial tuberosity
I -
Superficial - perineal body
Deep - median raphe, perineal body and external anal sphincter
A - Support perineal body, Resist intra-abdominal pressure, support the pelvic viscera
N - Perineal branch of pudendal nerve S2-S4
External anal sphincter OIAN
•Origin - skin and fascia surrounding the anus and
coccyx via the anococcygeal
ligament
•Insertion - perineal body
•Action - closes anal canal, supports perinealbody
•Nerve - Pudendal nerve (S2-4), Inferior Rectal nerve (aka Inferior Anal nerve)
External urethral sphincter OIAN
I - Surrounds the urethra
A - Compresses the urethra to maintain urinary continence
N - Pudendal nerve (S2-4)
