Week 8 Terms Flashcards
Computed tomography (CT)
Imaging technique that obtains cross-sectional X-ray views
Contrast medium
Radiopaque fluid used in radiation studies to determine shape and density of anatomy
Doppler studies
Technique that uses ultrasonic waves to measure blood flow in a vessel
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Diagnostic technique that uses radio frequency signals and magnetic energy to produce images
Fluoroscopy
Radiological technique that provides real-time images of an anatomical region
Malignant
Used to characterize tissue that shows disorganized, uncontrolled growth
Palpating
Assessing a part of the body by feeling outline, density, movement, or other attributes
Positron emission tomography (PET)
Type of medical imaging that measures specific metabolic activity in the target time
Airborne transmission precautions
Precautions that prevent airborne transfer of ds organism in the environment
Blood-borne pathogens
Harmful microbes that may present in and transmit through human blood and body fluids
Chemical risk factors
Hazards related to primarily to liquid, gas, and solid chemicals in the preoperative environment
Electrocution
Severe burns, cardiac disturbances, or death as a result of electrical current discharged into the body
Electrosurgical unit (ESU)
Medical device commonly used in sx to coagulate blood vessels and cut tissues
Eschar
Burned tissue fragments that accumulate on the ESU tip; can cause sparking and become source of ignition
Flammable
Capable of burning
Grounding
Path for electrical current to flow unimpeded through material and disperse back to the source or in the body
Hypersensitivity
Cell-mediated immune response to a substance in the body
Impedance (resistance)
Ability of a substance to stop or alter the flow of electrons through a conductive material
Latex
Naturally occurring sap obtained from rubber trees used to manufacture medical devices, supplies, and pt care items
Neutral zone (no-hands) technique
Method of transferring sharp instruments on the surgical field w/o hand-to-hand contact
Occupational exposure
Exposure to hazards in the workplace
Oxidizers
Agents or substance capable of supporting fire
Oxygen enriched atmosphere (OEA)
Environment that contains a high percentage of oxygen; high risk of fire
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Recommended procedures to help prevent the development of blood-borne ds after an exposure incident
Risk
Statistical probability of a given event based on the number of such events that have already occurred in a define population
Sharps
Any objects that can penetrate the skin and have the potential to cause injury and infection
Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
Recommended procedures to help prevent the development of blood-borne ds after an exposure incident
Smoke plume
Smoke created during use of ESU or laser
Standard precautions
Guidelines issued by the CDC to reduce the risk of transmission of blood-born and other pathogens
Transmission-based precautions
Standards and precautions to prevent the spread of infectious ds by its know to be infectious
Technical risk factors
Hazards related to medical devices and energy sources
Underwriters laboratories (UL)
Nonprofit agency that tests and certifies electrical equipment in the US
Volatile
Substance with a low boiling point that converts to a vapor at low temp
Current
Rate of electrical flow
Direct current (DC)
Low voltage; originates from a battery
Alternating current (AC)
Transmitted by a 220- or 110-V line; normally found in wall outlet
Voltage
Driving force behind the moving elections
NRC
Nuclear regulatory commission; federal agency associated with regulation of various aspects of medical waste
Anesthetic gases
General anesthesia
Ethylene oxide
Gas sterilization
Glutaraldehyde
Disinfection; use only under hood
Peracetic acid
Sterilization
Phenolic compounds
Decontamination (environmental)
Sodium Hypochlorite
Decontamination (environmental)
Formaldehyde
Tissue preservative
Methylmethacrylate
Bone cement
Fibrin glue
Tissue glue
Exertion
Amount of physical effort needed to perform a task
Posture
Critical component of musculoskeletal stress
Metastasis
Spread of malignant OR cancerous cells to a local or distant area of the body
