week 8: hematology 2 Flashcards
what is anemia?
decreased oxygen carrying capacity of the blood
how does anemia occur? what causes anemia (2)?
problem with red blood cells
-decreased # of RBCs
-decreased function of RBCs
conditions that may lead to sudden anemia?
bleeding can be obvious or subtle
conditions that may lead to anemia gradually?
- malnutrition
- malabsorption
- kidney disease (affecting production of erythropoietin)
classic manifestations of anemia (5 major signs & symptoms)
-dizziness/syncope (fainting)
-tachycardia (increased HR)
-SOB
-pallor (paleness)
-fatigue
which lab values indicate anemia?
hemoglobin, hematocrit, or RBC count
what will plasma and HCT level look like with someone with anemia?
increase in plasma & decrease in HCT
anemia is classified by RBC color and size which are what 2 lab values?
mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) = color
&
mean corpuscular volume (MCV) = size
hypochromic & lab abnormality?
decreased color
DECREASED MCH
hyperchromic
increased color
microcytic & lab abnormality?
decreased size
DECREASED MCV
macrocytic & lab abnormality?
increased size
INCREASED MCV
