week 6 lecture Flashcards
what is hemostasis?
arrest or stopping of bleeding
what happens when hemostasis is inadequate?
bleeding will occur
what happens when hemostasis is excessive?
clotting/thrombosis, embolus
what is an ischemic stroke?
a blood clot backs the flow of blood & oxygen to the brain
what is a hemorrhagic stroke?
bleeding in the brain due to a rupture of a blood vessel
what components of blood are pro-clotting?
platelets & clotting factors made by the liver
what components of blood are anti-clotting?
prostaglandin 12 causes vasodilation & nitric oxide
intrinsic vs extrinsic pathway
intrinsic: injury occurring inside vessels
extrinsic: injury occurring outside vessels
what do the both intrinsic and extrinsic pathway lead to?
both lead to a common pathway which leads to the fibrin clot formation
epistaxis
nose bleed
hemoptysis
cough up blood
hematemesis
vomit bright red blood
petechiae
-pin point round (rash)
-not associated with trauma
-spontaneous
-dont blanch
purpura
-more leakage of blood from blood vessels spontaneously
-no trauma
-don’t blanch & different from bruise
coffee ground emesis
-vomit digested old blood
-blood encounters gastric acids
-indicates bleeding from stomach ulcers
