Week 8: Glut., Post. Thigh Vasculature Flashcards

Lateral inferior and superior genicular artery + vein
part of network that provides collateral circulation around knee
(anastomosis)

Posterior tibial artery & vein
terminal branch of popliteal artery
supplies: posterior leg compartment and foot
vein will drain posterior leg

Perforating arteries
supply majority of post. thigh muscles plus vastus lateralis

Anterior tibial recurrent artery
part of anastomosis around the knee
supplies: the lateral knee via genicular arteries
What are the boundaries of the popliteal fossa?
Superomedial: Semitendinosus and Semimembranosus
Superolateral: biceps femoris
Inferomedial: medial head gastrocnemius
inferolateral: lateral head gastrocnemius
Floor: Femur, post. joint capsule and popliteus mm.
roof: skin and fascia

Structure: Inferior gluteal artery + vein
artery comes from terminal branch of ant. division of the internal iliac artery
Supplies:
- muscles and skin of glutes
- posterior surface of thigh

Circumflex fibular artery
comes off the ant. or post. tibial artery at the knee to anastomose around the knee

Long saphenous vein
anastomoses with small saphenous vein, empties into femoral vein

Medial Inferior and Superior Genicular Artery and vein
artery comes off popliteal artery
part of anastomoses that provide collateral circulation for the knee region

Internal pudendal artery + vein
artery comes from internal iliac artery
supplies:
- skin
- external genitalia
- muscles in perineal region
but nothing in the glute or post. thigh region

Descending branch from lateral circumflex artery + vein
contributes to anastomosis around knee

Arterial and venous anastomosis around knee

Structure: Internal iliac artery and internal iliac vein
Origin: common iliac artery
Supplies:
- pelvic organs
- gluteal muscles
- and perineum

Popliteal Artery + Vein
continuation of femoral artery
Supplies: Sup., mid., and inf. genicular arteries on both lateral and medial aspects of knee
What are the contents of the politeal fossa?
- termination of small saphenous vein
- popliteal artery & vein
- post. cut. nerve of the thigh
- lymph nodes/vessels

Small Saphenous vein
empties into the politeal vein in the popliteal fossa

Fibular artery & vein aka peroneal artery + vein
artery comes off post. tibial artery
supplies lateral leg and ankle
vein drains into posterior tibial veins

Anterior tibial artery + vein
artery comes off popliteal a.
Supplies: anterior compartment of leg
vein drains ant. compartment of leg into popliteal vein

Structure: Superior Gluteal Artery + vein
artery comes from post. divison of int. iliac artery
Supplies:
- Piriformis
- all three glutes
- TFL
