Week 7: Pelvic Viscera Flashcards
Structure: Rectum
Innervation: Rectal plexus, parasympathetic fibers from pelvic splanchnic n. S2-S4
increase peristalsis
Sympathetic fibers from Sacral splachnic n. L1, L2
decrease peristalsis
Blood supply: superior rectal artery & vein via the inf. mesenteric artery & vein
Internal anal sphincter
Structure: Ureter
Innervation: Pelvic splanchnic n.
Renal calculi (kidney stones) may get impacted where ureters pierce bladder wall. Pain afferents accompany sympathetic fibers. Passage of such stones produce “loin-to-groin” pain
Structure: Urinary Bladder
Innervation: vesical plexus
Urethra
(female)
Urethra, spongy part
(male)
Prostate
Testis
sperm production and hormone synthesis
Epididymis
storates of sperm to pass to the ductus deferens
Ductus Deferens
primary component of spermatic cord, conducts spern in from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct
Bulbourethral glands
pea-sized, these ducts pass to the spongy urethra and contains mucus-like secretion to mix w semen
Vagina
musculomembranous passage that connects the uterine cavity to the exterior.
Allows entrance/insertion of the penis, ejaculate, tampons, examining digits, exit of fetus, or menstrual fluid
Uterus
pear shaped, and distensible for examination of landmarks such as the ovaries
early embryo implants in the uterus where it matures (embryo, fetus)
Uterine tubes
conduit and site of fertilization for oocytes to travel into the peritoneal cavity in the uterus
Ovary
almond shaped female gonads, oocytes develop, also produces reproductive hormones
