What is a voice disorder?
When an individual voice differs and is considered inappropriate for ones age, culture, gender
What are some causes of a functional voice disorder?
Overuse, misuse, abuse
What are some functional voice disorders?
Hypofunctional - weak, muscles are not strong enough
hyperfunctional - strained, unhelpful muscles trying to contribute to voice
What is muscle tension dysphonia?
Wrong muscles try to help the voice, compressing false vocal folds
What is functional aphonia?
People with a normal larynx will completely lose their voice, it is usually preceded with respiratory illness
What is presbylaryngis?
Gap in the vocal folds
What is the cause of vocal fold paralysis?
Damage to vagus cranial nerve
What are some neurological disorders that can cause voice disorders?
Parkinson’s, spasmodic dysphonia, essential tremor
What are some structural causes of voice disorders?
Nodules, polyps, cysts, vocal fold lesions
