What is AAC?
Supplements or replaces verbal communication
Compare aided and unaided AAC.
Aided AAC includes the use of another physical object such as a communication board, pen/paper, or a voice output system
What is low tech AAC?
It does not require batteries, uses pictures on a screen, or an alphabet board
What is high tech AAC?
Computer speech, uses rechargeable batteries, and dynamic display
How do you determine which device is right for somebody?
This will depend on the individual’s current cognitive, visual, and fine motor abilities
What are some common myths about AAC?
Using AAC will prevent the acquisition of speech, some children are too young to use AAC, and that it makes it harder to learn
What communication skills are targeted in therapy?
Commenting and self-advocacy
How does culture affect someone’s views on disabilities and communication disorders?
Culture will affect whether/how disabilities are treated
What is cultural humility?
Ability to keep an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented
What is a dialect?
A form of a language associated with a specific region or group, a dialect can be distinguished by features of semantics, grammar, and pragmatics
How many dialects are there in the USA?
There are around 25 dialects
Compare mainstream and non-mainstream dialects.
Mainstream are more common, and they tend to be an umbrella for smaller ones
What is simultaneous language development?
Acquire two or more languages from birth, mixing languages is normal
What is sequential language development?
Acquire language one and then language two, language transfer is normal
What does language development for a bilingual child look like?
First words around 1-year-old, grammar and vocab develop the same as a monolingual child, important to take both languages into account
