Compare receptive and expressive language.
Receptive- how much you can understand and retain spoken and written words, precedes expressive language
Expressive- how much language you can produce or express
What are the three components of language and how many domains do each of them have?
form(structure) - 3 domains
content(meaning) - 1 domain
use(how and why) - 1 domain
What are the three domains of form?
Phonology, morphology, and syntax
What is the domain of content?
Content/semantics - assigning meaning to words
What is the domain of use?
Use/pragmatics - how and why do we use language
Describe the prelinguistic language stage.
The child uses gestures and physical regulation of adults to make needs known, tend to use gestures with words at the end of this stage
What is the first stage in the transition to intentionality?
Intentional communication, gestures and vocalizations coordinate with gaze, this emerges around 8-9 months
What is the second stage?
First words/protowords: the protowords emerge around 9-12 months, 10-16 months is when real words are used
What is the third stage?
This is the transition to multi words, wround 18-24 months children will know around 50 words and can combine them
What is the fourth stage?
vocabulary development - by this stage the child should have around 1,000 words in their vocabulary, in kindergarten closer to 2,000
By what age can children start having short conversations?
12-24 months
What does the mean length of utterance (MLU) measure?
it is a measure of the number of morphemes per utterance for children below the age of five, typically this corresponds with the child’s age
What are the types of speech sound errors? SODA
substitution errors, omission errors, distortion, and addition
Compare articulation and phonological disorders.
Articulation disorders - speech can be understood
Phonological disorders - is difficult to understand
What are some examples of atypical phonological processes?
backing, initial consonant deletion, fricatives replacing stops
