Week 7 - The Anterior Thigh Muscles Flashcards
What is the general action of the quadriceps?
Knee extensors
What is the action of the vastus muscles?
Extend the leg at the knee
What nerve innervates the quadricep muscles? Give its nerve roots.
Femoral nerve
L2 - L4
What are the actions of rectus femoris?
What allows it to perform these actions?
Extends at the knee and flexes at the hip
Stretches over both joints
Where does vastus intermedius lie in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
Posterior to rectus femoris
Which muscles make up ilipsoas?
Psoas major and iliacus
Is ilipsoas one muscle? Explain.
No - two muscles (psoas major and iliacus) that merge to form one tendon.
What is the general action of ilipsoas?
Hip flexors
What are the actions of psoas major?
Flexes at the hip
Assists in lateral rotation at the hip
What is the innervation of psoas major?
Anterior rami of L1, L2 and L3
What are the actions of iliacus?
Same as psoas major, i.e. -
Flexion at the hip
Assists in lateral rotation at the hip
What nerve innervates iliacus?
Femoral nerve
What is the action of psoas minor?
Assists iliacus in hip flexion and lateral rotation at the hip.
What is the innervation of psoas minor?
Anterior rami of L1 and L2
What are the actions of pectineus?
Adduction and flexion at the hip
