Week 1 - Pectoral Region Flashcards
What are the actions of pectoralis major?
Medial rotation of humerus
Flexion of humerus
Adduction of humerus
What nerve(s) innervate pectoralis major?
Medial and lateral pectoral nerves
What nerve innervates pectoralis minor?
Medial pectoral nerve
What are the actions of pectoralis minor?
Depresses tip of shoulder
Abducts scapula
What nerve innervates serratus anterior?
The long thoracic nerve
What are the actions of serratus anterior?
Pulls scapula against ribcage
Abducts scapula
What nerve innervates subclavius?
Nerve to subclavius
What are the actions of subclavius?
Pulls clavicle medially to stabilise the sternoclavicular joint
Explain the pathophysiology of a “winged scapula”
Damage to the long thoracic nerve results in paralysis of serratus anterior. Therefore, scapula no longer pulled against ribcage - appears to “pop” out of back.
How do you test for a winged scapula?
Get the patient to face a wall and push against it with outstretched arms.
